Stan.

A holistic entertainment experience

Stan, Australia’s first streaming video on demand (SVOD) service, launched in January 2015, months ahead of international competitors. During my time with Stan, the platform grew from 0 to 900,000 active subscribers and over 1.5 million users.

Challenge

The challenge was to deliver a seamless and high-quality experience across every device in the product ecosystem. Whether commuting on the bus or relaxing at home, Stan aimed to be the go-to entertainment hub, ensuring users could enjoy consistent, frictionless streaming anytime, anywhere. The main challenges included.

  • Ensuring a consistent, intuitive experience across all devices—from mobile phones to smart TVs.

  • Addressing unique UX challenges for remote, controller, and touch-based navigation.

  • Adhering to usability heuristics to ensure the platform was intuitive, easy to navigate, and met functional standards.

  • Developing a scalable design system to support new platforms and growing user demands.

Approach

To build a consistent experience across a diverse, multi-device ecosystem, the design process focused on understanding how users interact with streaming content across phones, web, and smart TVs. We collaborated closely with product managers and engineers to account for different navigation patterns and input methods, ensuring the experience felt intuitive whether users were tapping, clicking, or using a remote.

Part of my role was initiating a robust design system that enabled a unified experience across varying screen sizes while supporting future growth. This system bridged product and marketing teams, allowing reusable components to scale beyond the product into digital channels, rich media, and social content, promoting consistency and efficiency as the platform expanded.

Solution

The work resulted in a unified streaming experience designed to function seamlessly across mobile, web, and smart TV platforms, accounting for different input methods while maintaining visual and interaction consistency. Core navigation patterns and content discovery were simplified to reduce friction and help users easily find, watch, and resume content across devices. In parallel, a foundational design system established shared components and guidelines, supporting scalable delivery, improving collaboration across teams, and ensuring consistent use of brand assets across digital touchpoints.

Outcome

  • Multi-device platform delivered
Experience designed and scaled across mobile, web, and smart TV environments.

  • Unified design system established

Created a shared foundation supporting multiple screen sizes and future platform growth.

  • Consistent navigation across input types

Optimised for touch, mouse, and remote control interactions.
